The Grocer (UK) has recently published a very good article on the difficulties of making profits from online grocery sales.

Although based on the UK, it is a well written and accurate account of a dilemma in most of the developed markets. The time poor consumer likes and wants this service, but many do not want to pay the extra costs that the retailer incurs to get the product to their door.

The fight to maintain and defend existing customers has meant that charging the appropriate amount for the early stages of developing this service has been brushed under the carpet.

The rising popularity of the concept, coupled with new aggressive “pure players” like Amazon-Fresh, means the issue must now be managed properly!
